For those of you who attempt to fax POAs to Memphis using 901-546-4115, very often the phone rings but you can't fax. There's an alternate number I've been given that works. It is 901-546-4118.

Back in 1898 during the Spanish American war, needing to raise money for the war, Congress looked at new technology and decided to tax the telephone. Since then we've had a federal telephone excise tax. You've seen it on your bills. Well, that tax is dead and refunds have been ordered. The refund involves a three year look back and the rebate will be a refundable credit on the 1040. Not sure as to actual mechanics, i.e. whether actual telephone bills will have to be produced or IRS will come up with some kind of table similar to sales tax tables, but be prepared.

Although down temporarily, the society web site is back up and running. Be sure to check it frequently, as our esteemed web master will be adding content, especially bulletins from the IRS. It's a good place to get the news.

During the past year we've had some new members and here they are listed. If you spot one in your home town, be sure to pick up the phone and welcome them to the society.
